Former students, teachers and friends of East Belmont met recently in the Life Center of Part Street United Methodist Church for a fundraising rally.

We can’t think of too many cool things to do sometimes. Neighbors from all over Belmont have taken on several preservation activities of the “old” Belmont. This project to erect a monument to the East Belmont School comes on the heels of the successful opening of the Belmont Historical Society, and the Reid Community’s annual festival.

When the discussion of the Comprehensive Land Use Plan was going on, the term “neighborhood preservation” was thrown about. These projects contribute to neighborhood preservation efforts and we feel they should be supported.

Get out and be active in your neighborhood. There are plenty of stories to share with us all, young and old, newcomers and natives.   

Varsity Girls Golf      

Ashbrook 114, Crest 153, South Point 154, Forestview 165, North Gaston 168, Hunter Huss 169, East Gaston 171 — In a nine-hole match at Gastonia Municipal, Ashbrook’s Courtney Taylor and Crest’s Katie Thackerson logged scores of 35 for medalist honors Monday. South Point’s Alexa Mooney (37), East Gaston’s Samantha Godfrey (55), Forestview’s Shannon Smith (53), Hunter Huss’ Brittany Harrelson (55) and North Gaston’s Courtney Tigner (54) led their schools respectively. Hunter Huss hosts the next Big South meet Linwood Country Club next Monday.

Varsity Volleyball      

South Point 3, Highland Tech 1 (25-10, 24-26, 25-12, 25-15) — Kristen Barker had six kills and Chrissy Pickert had nine aces. South Point plays Thursday at North Gaston.

JV Volleyball

South Point 2, Highland Tech 0 (25-16, 25-19) — Abby Leong had four aces and Emily Wallace had four kills in the win.

Cross Country     

South Point’s Elyse Will finished 15th out of 306 runners in the championship division of the Eye Opener Cross Country race Saturday in Spartanburg, S.C. Will completed the race in 20 minutes, 59 seconds.

Crew’s constracted by the NCDOT to repave South Main Street/Armstrong Ford Road from Myrtle all the way out to the Fish Camps have been working hard for the past week and a half.

The paving project has been needed.

Large, heavy trucks having been using this route as a cut-through from both South Carolina and southeast Gastonia to access Hwy 273 and the new I-485. With all the home construction going on in the area, cement mixer trucks have also been using this stretch of road.

The workers have been kind enough to schedule around the school traffic in the morning and late afternoon. One lane is blocked for several minutes and inbound/outbound traffic is alternately routed through the construction.

The result is a very nicely paved road. Just watch out for a while, because it is unmarked pavement, and in the dark approaching the South Fork bridge, the road can be deceiving.
