High School Football – Big Homecoming Night Looming in Belmont

 sphs.jpg     football.jpg

Usually, most schools schedule lightly regarded opponents for special event nights such as homecoming, opening day, senior night, etc.

Not the South Point Red Raider Football team. Friday night’s match up with Charlotte Latin pits two unbeaten and top state-ranked teams, on South Point’s homecoming night.

Not to be outdone on the football field, the South Point homecoming court, also has 11 “players” to take the field at halftime.

Kevin Cary at the Charlotte Observer is picking Latin over the Raiders, 34-24.

Our friends and neighbors see it just a little differently on the Front Porch. If the defensive unit can stay focused and in control, we have a shot at sending the boys from the private school back home to their mommies, crying no doubt.

Speaking of crying, two weeks in a row now, at home and away at Forestview, “Megaphone Man”, has been shut down and quieted from his exhortations at the football contests.

At home against Ashbrook two weeks ago, Gaston County Police asked him to stop. At the Forestview game, he tried to play dumb and denied having the “artificial noise-making device”.

“Megaphone Man” has been a staple at SPHS football contests for as long as we can collectively remember. “Git-R-Dun Boys” used to be the call from the top of the stands. Recently however, this guy, your typical football, hometown former-jock, shaved bald and loud as the dickens, has gotten pretty derogatory in his calling out to players, officials, and coaches.

What was funny once, isn’t funny any more. We hope he can control himself.

Hometown Heroes – Matt Mitchell, Winston-Salem State U

Not all the hometown sports heroes play (or played) baseball, some played football. One recent graduate, Matt Mitchell, has made an immediate impact for the Winston-Salem State University as a placekicker for the football team.

Mitchell, a 2006 South Point grad and East/West All-Star, has contributed to the WSSU team by elevating the kicking game for the Rams.

Mitchell kicked a game-winning field goal on September 15 in Baltimore, MD against Morgan State, leading the Rams to a 19-17 victory.

Mitchell is the older brother of Joey Mitchell, a sophomore soccer player at SPHS. Matt Mitchell also played soccer through middle school and was recruited to play football as a placekicker when he got to the high school.

South Point still unbeaten, beats Forestview 35-16

Another great “away” crowd at Forestview on Friday night saw South Point stay unbeaten and at the top of the Big South Conference.

The football was good, even entertaining when Forestview went up early in the game. This led many to believe that maybe the Ashbrook game took something out of the team.

Then South Point took over — and the Gazette tells a better story than we could anyway.

Next Friday is South Point’s homecoming weekend. South Point will be hosting Charlotte Latin, a state power and ranked in News14’s – “14 to Watch” list. Good competition makes makes for good competitors.

We don’t believe the players or coaching staffs of North Gaston, Crest, or South Point are looking past their next games, but the media and local communities sure are — Phillip Gardner writes a story about the upcoming three weeks of football competition. We agree with him on this one – Can’t Hardly Wait.
