Old Men Can Still Play

Old jokes aside, emergency Vinny has plenty of zip

It is good to see that some old guys can truly get up off the couch and still play. As the Bud Light commercial says, “…overly competitive touch football player-hero…”, this guy ain’t it.

A week ago, Testaverde and his family spent Sunday afternoon in their New York-area home, watching the New York Jets and New York Giants on television. Testaverde spent this Sunday carving up the Cardinals.

21 and a half years after winning the Heisman Trophy, playing for 6 NFL teams, Vinny comes back to lead a desperate Carolina Panthers to an away victory.

Hometown Heroes – Matt Mitchell, Winston-Salem State U

Not all the hometown sports heroes play (or played) baseball, some played football. One recent graduate, Matt Mitchell, has made an immediate impact for the Winston-Salem State University as a placekicker for the football team.

Mitchell, a 2006 South Point grad and East/West All-Star, has contributed to the WSSU team by elevating the kicking game for the Rams.

Mitchell kicked a game-winning field goal on September 15 in Baltimore, MD against Morgan State, leading the Rams to a 19-17 victory.

Mitchell is the older brother of Joey Mitchell, a sophomore soccer player at SPHS. Matt Mitchell also played soccer through middle school and was recruited to play football as a placekicker when he got to the high school.

Belmont Middle School Softball Rocks !

Our contributing fans from the Belmont Middle School sports “department” have submitted a couple of photos of the current softball team.

The team is doing well, recently beating Grier MS, 6-3. The girls are 8-1 on the season and we think that the playoffs should be starting soon.
