Friday Night Lights in Belmont
Tonight at Lineberger Stadium:
Alexander Central (1-2) at South Point (2-0)
Series history: The teams have never met.
Players to watch: Alexander Central QB Josh Russell has passed for 366 yards and four TDs. His top target is WR Byron Mays (155 yards, two TDs). South Point QB Desmond Lowery is coming off a 145-yard, three-TD performance against Kings Mountain in which he directed the Red Raiders to 459 yards of offense.
Storyline: South Point has been impressive in its first two games and better hope it doesn’t have a problem with Alexander Central tonight if it hopes to compete for the Big South title. That’s because North Gaston routed this team 42-7 in Week 1. Alexander Central beat St. Stephens 41-21 and lost to Hickory 40-12. The Cougars are allowing 296.7 yards per game, which plays into South Point’s strength.
Game kicks off at 7:30 PM. In Belmont, tailgating starts about 5:00 PM, in the parking lot outside of the stadium. With this being the first homegame of the season, there will be a large crowd. Be patient finding parking and be patient when leaving after the game.

“This is a favorite of many southern cooks. It’s actually a friend’s recipe, and it tastes great!
12 large onions, chopped
8 cups chopped green tomatoes
½ cup salt
6 red peppers, chopped
6 green peppers, chopped
6 cups sugar
3 cups vinegar
1 ½ tablespoon celery seed
Put onions, tomatoes, and salt in saucepan. Cover with boiling water. Cook 5 minutes. Drain for ½ hour. Combine vegetables with remaining ingredients in saucepan. Bring to a boil and cook 10 minutes. Seal in jars.
To “drain for ½ hour” simply pour the mixture into a colander and let set in your sink at least 30 minutes. Do not press on the mixture or attempt to remove excess liquid. Simply let the mixture sit and drain naturally.”
Homeless and Not Liking It
There is an article in today’s Gaston Gazette about a homeless man’s trek across our community.
As the east side of Gaston County grows, both “gateway” citities of Belmont and Mt. Holly must face the issue of adequate housing, sheltering, and relationships with the temporary homeless and the chronic homeless.
Our editorial board has a split opinion of solutions or steps necessary to address the issue in our small town. Homelessness is an issue that needs to be as close to a consensus agreement as possible for the problem to be addressed adequately. We are seeking our neighbor’s opinions and solutions.
Belmont and Mt. Holly have crisis management programs in the form of the BCO, CRO and SOCKS; temporary solutions for women and children at Catherine’s House; support for teens and young men through With Friends — although they had relocated to Gastonia; and, local Housing Authorities are addressing permanancy.
One thing is for sure, on this day, homeless families and individuals do exist in communities regardless of the impression of prosperity. How we respond to people in this situation identifies what type of community we are and we hope to be…
