Hometown Heroes – Matt Mitchell, Winston-Salem State U
Not all the hometown sports heroes play (or played) baseball, some played football. One recent graduate, Matt Mitchell, has made an immediate impact for the Winston-Salem State University as a placekicker for the football team.
Mitchell, a 2006 South Point grad and East/West All-Star, has contributed to the WSSU team by elevating the kicking game for the Rams.

Mitchell kicked a game-winning field goal on September 15 in Baltimore, MD against Morgan State, leading the Rams to a 19-17 victory.
Mitchell is the older brother of Joey Mitchell, a sophomore soccer player at SPHS. Matt Mitchell also played soccer through middle school and was recruited to play football as a placekicker when he got to the high school.
Rauch’s late heroics no surprise to locals who saw him do it in 2002

He’s been a clutch player his whole youth sport career and a great pick in anyone’s book.
Last Saturday’s win was just part of a storybook of goal setting and accomplishments for this great kid !
